"Selfishly we don't want to share this cabin! It was wonderful. The cabin is perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the valley. Great open view - yet completely private. No cabins on top of you. Enjoyed playing pool as much as sitting in the hot tub and viewing the stars. It was nice having a real charcoal grill as opposed to a campsite style grill. Nicely furnished - all of the comforts of home. This was our 2nd time renting from Great Cabins in the Smokies. Both experiences were excellent. We're ready to go back!"

"We were very pleased with our recent stay in the Rendezview cabin. Check in was so easy and the directions to the cabin were perfect. The cabin was clean and tastefully decorated. We called the rental office the next morning because the can opener was stripped and didn't work, when we came back later that afternoon there sat a brand new electric can opener on the counter. We read lots of reviews on the local cabins to rent and are so pleased with our decision renting from "Great Cabins in the Smokies" which we have already recommended it to several people. "The cabin was great and the location was perfect. Although the cabin was not as secluded as we had expected we never saw another person in the area and enjoyed the short time it took to get to both Pigeon forge and Gatlinburg from the cabin. The people at Great Cabins were extremely helpful, especially when we got stuck in traffic on our way in and had to reschedule a couple of things. The cabin was clean and minus the plethora of taxidermied animals was decorated very nicely. Thanks for everything! "

"We were in deep despair when we checked into another cabin by another company on Friday evening. It was dirty and run down and just horrible. Wife and I agreed that evening next day we would find another unit somewhere else. Saturday morning we were up and looking for another cabin and we called Great Cabins and found out about this unit, and they accept dogs, which we had our four legged family member so we went and looked at it, and it was magical at first viewing. Wife walked in and said wow, and we knew this is where we wanted to stay the remaining days of our vacation, and so we did. I had not a single complaint, and all praise for the unit. The cabin was clean, beautiful and the view is breath taking. There is not going to be any more guessing for us, we have the card for the company and from this point on if we or any of our friends and family need a place up there we will give the name of the cabin and company for a great stay in the smokies."

Splashes of Color in The Smokies!

By the beginning of October, trees in the Smoky Mountains high country that are now showing bright fall colors are the yellows of American beech and yellow birch and different shades of reds on mountain ash, pin cherry and mountain maple. In the lower elevations, a few early color changing species such as sourwood and sumac are showing bright reds now, but are scattered. Some dogwoods and maples are beginning to turn different colors in some areas as well. Fall wildflowers such as goldenrod and asters are colorful throughout the park and some blueberry and blackberry shrubs are also changing color.

The majority of the deciduous forest at 4,000 feet elevation and below is still predominantly green, but now with splashes of color dotting the slopes. A succession of warm, sunny days and cool crisp, but not freezing nights will bring about the most spectacular color display. At this part of the autumn season, some areas of the Smoky Mountains are showing more reds throughout the landscape than in other years.

As the leaf color increases, so does the number of autumn leaf peekers. While scenic drives are a good way to see fall colors in the Smoky Mountains, taking to the trails is a wonderful way to enjoy the splendors of autumn. The Appalachian Trail, accessed at Clingmans Dome or Newfound Gap, would be an excellent hiking experience during this time of year.

Autumn in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a special time when a glorious leaf season of several weeks is enjoyed by visitors as fall colors travel down the mountainsides from the highest elevations to the foothills. Fall colors in the Smoky Mountains are magnificent and varied because of the amazing diversity of trees. Some 100 species of native trees live in the Smokies, the vast majority of which are deciduous. The timing of fall color change depends upon so many variables that the exact dates of "peak" season are impossible to predict in advance. In the Smoky Mountains, autumn color displays above 4,000 feet start as early as mid-September with the turning of yellow birch, American beech, mountain maple, hobblebush, and pin cherry, clearly visible from such vantage points as Clingmans Dome Road.

By the later stages of September, the right ingredients are beginning to emerge, the time when cooler temperatures and sunny days mix with some rainfall to bring on a spectacular autumn color display in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The timing of color change and leaf fall is primarily sparked by the calendar; that is, the increasing length of night. As days grow shorter and nights grow longer and cooler, chemical processes in the leaf begin to paint the landscape with nature’s autumn palette in the Smoky Mountains.

September’s suggested hikes for seeing the Smoky Mountains in autumn: Albright Grove and Sugarland Mountain Trail as well as high elevation hikes to Andrews Bald or Mt. LeConte would be time well spent.

Good places to see fall colors in the Smoky Mountains include Newfound Gap Road from Alum Cave Trailhead to Kephart Prong Trailhead, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Foothills Parkway East & West, and Heintooga Ridge Road to Balsam Mountain Campground. Suggested hikes include Rich Mountain Loop, Chestnut Top Trail, Smokemont Loop, Kanati Fork, and Sutton Ridge Overlook (Lower Mt. Cammerer Trail). The Wears Valley Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Oktoberfest 2010. This event will be highlighted by the Stihl Timbersports American Title Event Competition, a chainsaw carving contest, several local country and bluegrass bands, and much more!

Visitors can enjoy 3 days of local crafts displayed by over 100 local vendors, live music & singing everywhere, a lumberjack competition with over 70 competitors, local food vendors, story telling, as well as a petting zoo with activities for children. The award winning National Logging competition will be an exciting event not to be missed!

February is starting out with a white blanket over the Smokies! What a beautiful, glistening sight! It’s a perfect blank canvas for the new year. This month opens with The Smoky Mountain Gospel Jubilee, hosted by Country Tonight Theater. For 2 nights you can experience the heritage of Gospel in it’s genuine form. This event is free, and on a first-come, first-seated basis. Ms. Lisa-Ann Hammond is the scheduled singer, along with 6 choirs from North Carolina (Trinity Baptist from Asheville, Central Baptist from Kannapolis, and McLeansville Baptist from McLeansville), Georgia (Floyd Road Baptist from Austell and Calvary Baptist from Powder Springs), and of course, Tennessee (Calvary baptist, Chattanooga)! Ralph Sexton, jr., Joe Arthur, Tommy Steel, T.D. Burgess and Curtis Parker are the featured preachers. This marks the 18th Smoky Mountain Jubilee, and is set to open Thursday, February 4th at 6pm. The second service is the following morning at 9:30am, with the final service beginning at 6 Friday evening.

Everyone is looking for ways to stay green this summer. The Smoky Mountains provide plenty of activities for your vacation that will fill your lungs with fresh mountain air. The kids are eagerly awaiting the final bell to ring to signal what they have been feeling for weeks: summer is here! And with summer comes family vacations and fun! The Smokies are surrounded by plenty of activities and adventures for your family to experience.

Friday, June 13 opens Dollywood's Kidsfest! Kidsfest features shows especially for the kids, such as the VeggieTales Live! show, returning again this year by popular demand. This year the Kratt brothers, featured in PBS' Zoobomafoo series, are joining the scene for Kidsfest.

Up and down the middle of Pigeon Forge, the Parkway is bursting at the seams with attractions. Dixie Stampede is premiering a newly choreographed show this season, featuring the Stampede of the Buffalo. In the center of Pigeon Forge you will find The Old Mill Square, a historical complex complete with restaurants, a bakery and creamery, a candy shop, a pottery shop, craft shops, and of course, a working mill, all of which are joined by cobblestone paths. The mill is one of the most photographed in the country, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you are looking for something a little more fast-paced, challenge your family to a shoot-out, futuristic style at one of the Lazer Tag facilities on the Parkway, Ultrazone and Lazerport. Lazerport features a state of the art lazertag arena as well as an arcade, go-carts, and black light mini-golf. If go-carts are your primary interest, check out the Nascar SpeedPark, where on June 25, Nascar racer Kasey Kahne will be appearing! Nascar SpeedPark boasts 8 tracks where you can show your kids how it's done.

East Tennessee is home to the Tennessee Smokies. However, these particular Smokies aren't exactly the tall mountainous formations with trees... you will find bears though! Big, huggable ones that will take pictures with you and lead you as you root, root, root for the home team. The Smokies are East Tennessee's minor league baseball team, and in June their season is in full-tilt. Taking on teams such as Chattanooga Lookouts and Mobile Bay Bears, this season promises exciting home games.

The Smokies is Arts & Crafts Heaven!

The Smoky Mountain area is famous for their local arts and crafts! While staying

DOLLY PARTON PAYS TRIBUTE TO PORTER WAGONER AT DOLLYWOOD

Sevier County superstar Dolly Parton took some personal time off from her busy press schedule Saturday to celebrate the life and music of former television partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner. In her own Celebrity Theater, the singer spent an emotional and poignant afternoon singing the songs and sharing the stories of the time she and Porter spent together and the impact the legend had on all who surrounded him. Parton also took the opportunity to surprise manager, and original Wagon Master, Don Warden with an induction into the Missouri based Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. The Dollywood Theater was transformed with familiar sets from the long-running country music show and Dolly’s band, The Backwoods Boys, dressed in the signature costumes from the era. Dolly, herself, wore a Porter-inspired outfit to set the mood for the afternoon.“This won’t be a sad time,” she assured the crowd. “This will be a happy time!”

The private event was attended by Wagoner’s children and grand children and many of the Grand Ole Opry stars who had performed with him during his long and successful career. “The Porter Wagoner Show” debuted on syndicated television in 1960 and the flashy country star brought new talent Dolly Parton aboard in 1967. Parton credits his support and the popularity of their duets together, as the foundation of her own success. During the emotional memorial, Wagon Master steel guitar player Don Warden was surprised by Parton with a tribute of his own. Dressed in the original costume he wore on the famed show, Warden was gifted with a sculpture from Parton who described him as her “Angel on Earth” and told of his induction into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. When Dolly left the Porter Wagoner Show, Warden went with her as manager and has remained with her as an adviser through the years. This very special tribute marked the first time the two had performed together in 34 years. Eyes glistening with tears, Parton closed the memorial with the original version of her 1974 musical farewell to their partnership, “I Will Always Love You”. “Not a dry eye in the house,” says Sevierville media artist Jacob Timmons, who designed and manages Parton’s web empire. “The whole first row of the theater was Porter’s family, the second row was legends from the Grand Ole Opry. It was a powerful and moving expression of love”. Porter Wagoner died on October 28, 2007, in Nashville Tennessee. His career spanned seven decades.
